#'s contributions in class show good understanding and interest and ~ coursework marks are also generally good. 

^ could achieve an excellent grade in the summer but ^ needs to broaden ~ knowledge by reading and revising so that ^ can tackle open-ended questions more fully.

However, ~ grasp of fundamental concepts is somewhat insecure and I feel that this is holding him back and making it difficult for him to understand new material.  

# shows excellent understanding and interest in the subject. ^ applies ~ knowledge well and ~ performance in the 'mock' exam was very encouraging.  I am sure ^ will achieve a top grade this summer.

Thorough revision, especially of inorganic and organic topics should enable him to achieve top grades.

^ has found the work difficult this year but ^ should achieve a reasonable grade if ^ applies himself fully.

^ has a clear grasp of the concepts studied but needs to increase ~ knowledge of chemical reactions, etc, particularly in organic chemistry.

However, ^ has not yet shown the level of commitment required to ensure that ^ learns the basic facts and level of detail required for a top grade.

^  works with some enthusiasm in class and regularly contributes to class discussion. However, ~ written work is often superficial and/or incomplete and in tests ^ relies heavily on ~ excellent grasp of scientific principles rather than spending time on revision
